Wellness Programs - Community Education and Support

Alzheimer Caregiver Support:

This program is facilitated by the Alzheimer Society of Huron and is offered the first Monday of every month in the Board room at the Grand Bend Area CHC at 1:30 p.m. If you are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s you also need to take care of yourself. Join others in this supportive environment. There is no fee. The number to call is 1-800-561-5012. Program available fall, winter and spring.

Canadian National Institute for the Blind Low Vision Clinic:

A free drop in clinic from 10 a.m. -2 p.m. the second Thursday of every second month, Feb to Dec at GBACHC in the Adult Day wing. Staff will assist you with the latest information and gadgets to help those with vision loss. Check the monthly calendar for dates or contact Health Promoter Cindy Maxfield at 519-238-1556 ext. 231 for details.

Coping with Grief:

The Christmas Holidays can be a very emotional time when you are dealing with the loss of a loved one. This free group program facilitated by Social Worker Mickey Gurbin at the GBACHC helps you with coping strategies to get through a grieving process with support. Program is the first Wednesday of every month from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m. Call Mickey at 519.238.1556 x223 for more info.

Persistant Pain Management and Support Group:

This 6 week program includes education and support. It deals with topics such as what is chronic pain, managing medications, stress managemnent, relaxation techniques, better sleep and much more. This free program is offered in the spring and fall and includes many health care professionals. Contact Registered Social Worker Mickey Gurbin at 519-238-1556 Ext. 223 for further dates and times.

Sunset Cinema:

The first Thursday of every month fall, winter & spring at 7:30 pm is movie night in the Community Room at the GBACHC. View an interesting film with discussion to follow. Night is free but donations gladly accepted. Contact Cindy Maxfield Health Promoter for details 519-238-1556 ext. 231

Choices for Change, Addiction Counselling Services:

This Program provides assessment and treatment for people with substance abuse and problem gambling issues. Held at the Hensall site of the GBACHC. Adults, youth and family counselling is available. You may self-refer to this program by calling 1-877-218-0077 x302.

Parkinson's Support Group

This support group was created in response to an identified need in our community for individuals and their caregivers who live with Parkinson's Disease. The group has been established in partnership with the Parkinson's Society - London chapter. The aim of this group is to enhance member's knowledge on specific topics related to Parkinson's disease and provide them with opportunities to dialogue with each other, ask questions to occasional guest speakers and share resources. Our hope is to create a network in our community where individuals will feel supported and encouraged. This group aims to facilitate personaal growth, enpowerment and increase knowledge and understanding of this disease. Blood Pressure Clinic:

Have your blood pressure monitored every month by a trained volunteer in the Day Centre wing of the Health Centre. The program is offered the last Thursday of every month from 2-4 p.m. Call Cindy Maxfield Health Promoter for details 519-238-1556 ext. 231. Everyone welcome.

The Power of Parenting:

This 6 week program recognizes that parents are the first line of defense in the development of healthy, well-adjusted children. This group serves to educate and support parents in their efforts to navigate the challenges of parenting. Topics include parenting styles, effective communication, setting limits, behavior issues, bullies, drugs and curfews, self esteem and confidence building. Facilitated by Social Worker Mickey Gurbin 519-238-1556 ext. 223.

Minds In Motion:

The Alzheimer Society of Huron County and the Grand Bend Area Community Health Centre offer a eight week exercise and social recreational program for people with dementia and their caregivers. This program is offered for 6 weeks on Thursday afternoons starting in the Spring in the Community Room. Smoking Cessation:

Trying to Quit? The Grand Bend Area Community Health Centre in partnership with Centre for Addication and Mental Health (camh) and the Stop Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients (STOP), a smoking cessation program that offers counselling support and Nicotine Replacement Therapy (patch, gum, inhaler, lozenge) at no cost to patients/clients who want to quit smoking.
