What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is the health care profession dedicated to enhancing and restoring mobility. When you are free to move, or have mobility, you feel better and enjoy life more. Physiotherapy's unique contribution to health care stems from its advanced understanding of how the body moves, what keeps if from moving well, and how to return mobility.

What is a Physiotherapist?

Physiotherapists have the education, applied knowledge and treatment techniques to:

• Improve and maintain physical mobility and independence
• Manage and reduce pain, physical limitations or disabilities that may limit activities
• Improve overall fitness, health and well being.

What does a physiotherapist do?

A physiotherapist will ask you to describe your condition, your history, lifestyle and goals for mobility. These four basic steps are followed:

• Assess the level of mobility, strength, endurance and other physical abilities to determine the impact of your condition on your physical function, whether at work, rest or play
• Diagnose the condition and develop a treatment plan to restore movement and reduce pain or limitations to your mobility
• Treat the condition and explain its effect on functional ability. Progress is measured regularly, and treatment adjusted according to needs and preferences
• Advise how to manage the condition independently and prevent avoidable recurrences or complications.
